How to Avoid Group Project Disasters Using Google

when disaster strikes

Have you ever looked like the woman in this photo? I know I have. Some of the most frustrating experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life were group projects.

That isn’t to say that I always had terrible team mates. There are just so many things that can go wrong. And everyone’s little mistakes can snowball into a giant rolling ball of doom that wipes out everything in its path.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Group projects don’t have to be so stressful. Over the years I learned ways to avoid the most common problems that people encounter while working as a team. And yes, Google is the answer.

How to Stop Wasting Time Online

I  love the Internet. I really, really love the Internet. If you promised me lightning-fast Internet and a souped-up PC in exchange for my cellphone, TV and all my video game consoles, I’d do it.

how to stop wasting time online

Because I love the Internet so much, I know from experience what it’s like to waste entire days online–days that should have been spent working on more important projects. I’ve learned a lot since those days of blissful unproductivity. And it looks like I did it just in time. According to a recent article by Mike Elgan:

The individual, the company, the nation that is best at avoiding distractions in the future will have an enormous advantage in the competitive marketplace.

That’s because the Internet is increasingly becoming an addicting distraction instead of a useful tool for most people. So what can you do to avoid all of those online temptations?  Here are the strategies that have worked for me.

5 Tips to Avoid Burning Out

burned-outAng batang masipag, pag laki… pagod. – Ai Ai de las Alas (Filipino comedienne)

Translation: A hardworking child grows up to be… a haggard adult.

I came across this hilarious quote a few days ago. It’s true, isn’t it? Hardworking kids do get burnt out. They lose all enthusiasm for work and sometimes even for life. But no matter what your age, too much stress will take all the fun out of the things you once loved to do. It’ll make you look older than you actually are, and it can eventually kill you. You may still be on holiday right now, but you know all that unfinished work’s going to catch up with you by next week. These 5 easy tips can help you avoid burning out.

Imitation is the Best Form of Flattery… Not.

This is interesting. Someone liked our article on How to Stop Being So Lazy so much, she copy/pasted it into her own blog and passed it off as her own. The only thing she changed was the title and the last line. Everything else is Writista’s original text.

While this is really flattering, it is also illegal.

Perhaps the poster didn’t realize that she was plagiarizing our work. Perhaps I should write a series of articles about plagiarism… on how to spot it, how to avoid it, etc. Plagiarism is a widespread practice, and most people know it’s wrong, but many people still steal other people’s work, out of laziness or ignorance.

Write or Die Helps You Fight Writer’s Block

The worst thing about writer’s block is that it’s not just hard to get started, it’s just as hard to keep going. So when I came across Write or Die a few days ago, I got hooked immediately. It’s a terrific little website for combating writer’s block.

The idea behind Write or Die is simple but extremely effective. You specify 4 things: a word goal, a time goal, a difficulty level and a grace period. Then you start typing. What’s so special about Write or Die is that it literally punishes you if you stop writing.  Continue reading ‘Write or Die Helps You Fight Writer’s Block’

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably already tried a lot of “how to beat procrastination” tips, with little success. No matter how many times you promise yourself that you won’t do it again, you always end up cramming that project and irritating other people. But then, you probably haven’t ever tried these tips.
